Adrian Flux News: What if a UFO trashes my car?

Flux moves to quell alien insurance fears…

Following recent news stories about a UFO allegedly wrecking a wind turbine, specialist car insurance broker Adrian Flux had a call from a curious customer asking what would happen if a UFO crashed into his car. Which got the Flux boffins thinking about what bizarre accidents were or weren't covered.

Note: Adrian Flux aims to offer cheaper car insurance and has a huge range of policies for the motoring enthusiast. For details contact the Adrian Flux quote line on 0800 505 3000, email the company at quotes@adrianflux.co.uk, or see the Flux homepage on www.adrianflux.co.uk

Italian Job - How would you get the gold?

I'm a little late picking up on this, but the Royal Society of Chemistry (serious science boffin types) have launched a competition seeking ways to recover the gold from the famous teetering coach cliff-hanger.

  • Submissions must be based upon the principles of serious scientific rigour
  • Submissions must include a description of not less than 150 words of the method of rescue, plus detailed image/s to complement the claims.
  • Entrants must assume that 30 minutes after Croker's declaration the bus will plunge.
  • Entrants must explain all assumptions made e.g. the individual weights of the passengers, weight of gold bars and the length of the vehicle.
  • Workings for all maths-based solutions must be demonstrated.
  • The judges will not accept any solutions that involve the employment of a helicopter.

The RSC will announce the winner of the competition, and publish the entries, on 8 January 2009. Deadline for entries, which should include diagrams and full details, is 1 January 2009.

Check out the BBC's report on this for a little extra reading.

Site login function is broken fixed

I'm aware and will be fixing it tomorrow. I may also take the opportunity to do a wipe of the site and start things from scratch as it is a major upgrade process and I'm not entirely sure how easy it will be to import the current database into the new setup.

So far it looks like I'll be launching an entirely new site in the next few weeks, being working on it today and it's taking shape. The development version is online but I need to spend some time on graphics and layout so I'm not going to show it off yet... (it's as ugly as this one at the moment)..

Until then, everything should be working as normal again here... (someone text or phone me if it isn't, but so far it all works for me.)

Lakes Tour 2007

Good news, good news... and a sense of deja vu.

As with the article below about last years Lakes Tour, the Mini Mad Merseyside website has again reappeared along with some basic details of this years tour, taking place on the weekend of June 8th-11th.

An application form is online, but only includes pricing for basic entry (£12) with no details of camping costs. It seems to suggest that camping details will follow so if anyone is interested I'd suggest printing off the form and registering your interest with the £12 payment.

For anyone who hasn't been before, this is a long standing highlight of the year for me. The Lakes Tour has inspired various similar events around the country, including the immense (but fully booked) Moorland and Coastal organised by Dean of Northern Minis.

It's worth noting that this is rapidly becoming a Bini dominated event, but classic Minis are still more than welcome.

Anyone interested, add your name in the forums so we have an idea of who's going.

Long time, no news...

It's been a long, long time since anything has been posted on the front page of the site and I'm painfully aware that I've said I'm working on revamping the site on several occasions. So, killing two birds with one stone, here's a brief update on the development situation and the first news article this year...

The "new" site I was working on has been put on hold. The CMS (content management system) that makes up the framework of the site is close to a major new version release which promises some huge improvements over the existing software. With that in mind, I've avoided doing any more work with the current software as I'll invariably need to make alot of changes when the new software comes out.
